Omega-3 companies need to become more aware of Scope 3 emissions and how they will be impacted by supplier emissions as they navigate their sustainability journey (and as more regulations worldwide make these requirements mandatory). More international companies are taking on the challenges of mitigating these Scope 3 emissions among supply chain partners in many ways, like offering free emissions consulting or offering incentives for setting science-based emissions targets. Read on below for a snapshot of how three large players on the world stage are tackling these issues.
EC Announces Consultation About Proposed MOAH Regulation for Food Additives
The European Commission (EC) has recently issued a working document announcing an open consultation to stakeholders on a proposal for a maximum limit on mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) for food additives. In brief, the EC has announced the proposal to set a maximum limit (ML) for MOAH at 2 mg/kg for all food additives, which includes antioxidants. The EC’s preferred approach is the establishment of a general limit for MOAH for all food additives in Regulation (EU) No 231/2021. No information has been provided regarding the timeline for when the regulation is expected to be enforced.
Stakeholders have been invited to comment on the proposal by March 15. Comments should be supported by data on:
Reasons why the proposed ML cannot be achieved
Sources of the contamination
Mitigation measures already/to be implemented
A proposed timeline for complying with the proposed ML
Raw occurrence data on samples on which good practices were used
Analytical concentration of each sample
The LOQ for each sample
Information on the applied mitigation measures for the concerned batch
Sampling year.
Comments can be provided directly to the EC to the contacts stated in the working document. Please contact Harry Rice or Gerard Bannenberg with any questions.

New VITAL Data Shows Reduction in Autoimmune Disease Risk with Omega-3 Supplementation
A study published in Arthritis & Rheumatology provided new observational data from the VITAL trial on 21,592 patients who were followed for an additional two years after the trial ended. The data showed that the advantages of daily omega-3 supplementation remained statistically significant, with a 17% hazard ratio, in reducing the risk of autoimmune diseases.

The European Commission (EC) has opened a four-week comment period to allow feedback on a regulation to ban the use of Bisphenol A (BPA) in food contact materials. This includes plastic and coated packaging, but also other types of products such as food processing equipment. This proposal is a follow-up to a scientific assessment published by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which concluded that there are health concerns associated with current exposure levels to BPA, notably on the immune system, for consumers across all age groups.
BPA used in food packaging and reusable containers can migrate into food and beverages in very small amounts. This proposed regulation follows a ban six years ago of BPA in drinking bottles and containers for infants and children. A timeline of regulations and scientific opinions about BPA in the EU can be found here.
GOED suggests members confirm that their products do not come in contact with any BPA. If you have any questions, reach out to Gerard Bannenberg.
