Screen Shot 2023-10-25 at 1.32.35 PM

GOED’s Board of Directors met earlier this month for its annual strategic planning meeting. In preparation for the meeting, GOED compiled historical membership data and prepared an update on the GOED 2025 strategic pillars. GOED staff and the board also reviewed the proposed 2024 budget and new officers were appointed for 2024. Highlights, including accompanying slides, are included below:

    • The board reviewed historical membership numbers from 2019 through 2023, which showed positive growth in GOED membership.
    • Progress on the GOED 2025 pillars was reviewed.
      • Member services:
        • The board reviewed membership progress and ongoing member engagement.
        • A decision was made to hold a webinar at the end of the year to review GOED activities and provide a “state of the industry” update.
        • There was a discussion on how to improve non-dues sales.
      • Communications:
        • GOED highlighted the success of this year’s Global Omega-3 Day (March 3) and discussed ongoing work in international markets.
        • There was a discussion on how to improve GOED’s Communications Committee. A task force will be formed to discuss further. If you are interested in participating, please email Elana Natker.
        • Just a reminder to members that GOED has created an editorial calendar and toolkit for retailer promotions for 2024 (download here).
      • Science:
        • GOED provided an update on the ongoing Clinical Study Database (CSD) data extraction of omega-3 studies and shared how the database is being used internally and externally.
        • Board members discussed CSD subscriptions and complimentary member projects, neither of which are meeting expectations.
        • A decision was made to allow select academic institutions to access the database to increase visibility and promote more omega-3 science.
        • The board also approved commissioning a meta-analysis on omega-3s and bleeding.
      • New Initiatives – Sustainability:
        • GOED provided an update on progress on the Sustainability pillar.
        • The Board approved a materiality assessment in 2024 to better understand the risks and opportunities facing our industry.
      • New Initiatives – Diagnostics:
        • GOED, along with personalized nutrition consultancy Nlumn, which has been consulting on this pillar, shared progress on the work done in 2023, which includes consumer surveys about diagnostics in five countries and a white paper (yet to be published) on the state of omega-3 diagnostics testing.
        • At this time the board did not fund additional work on this pillar but Nlumn will present data at GOED Exchange 2024 to further engage with membership on how we might move this pillar forward.
      • GOED 2023 year-to-date financials were shared with the board and a preliminary budget for 2024 was proposed. The board will approve the budget on the December 2023 board call, after which we will share the budget with membership.
      • Officer appointments:
        • No officer election was held because the number of interested parties matched the number of officer spots available. The officers for 2024 are:
          • Jorge Brahm, Golden Omega (Past-Chair)
          • Gonzalo Caceres, TASA (Chair)
          • Michelle Stout, Amway (Vice-Chair)
          • Charles Perez, dsm-firmenich (Secretary)
          • Todd Norton, Aker Biomarine (Treasurer)

New Member Request Regarding Codex Proposal for New Work on Microbial Omega-3 Oil Standard

The agenda for the 28th Session of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils (CCFO) has been announced and GOED is seeking member support for our Proposal for New Work on a Standard for Microbial Omega-3 Oils, which was submitted in June and will be discussed during the meeting.

Should CCFO accept GOED’s Proposal, it will be necessary for a Codex Member Country (CMC) to volunteer to chair an electronic working group to work on a draft standard. Therefore, it’s very important that GOED gain support from CMCs in advance of February’s meeting. For this reason, GOED requests that members who have an interest in this work contact their CMC delegates as soon as possible to share a copy of the Proposal for New Work and to express the importance for your business of working on this Standard. GOED would be happy to participate in a discussion with your CMC. While delegates are not always the same from meeting to meeting, the report from CCFO27 includes (starting on page 26) a list of meeting participants from the CMCs.

GOED’s Gerard Bannenberg and Harry Rice will participate in the meeting, which will be held from February 19-23, 2023 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. If you have any questions, please email them.

GOED first reported on this work in the September 15, 2022 GOED Current and last reported on it in the March 6, 2023 GOED Current.
