GOED’s board of directors held its quarterly board meeting earlier this month. Below is a recap of the discussion.
The board approved a plan to execute a strategy “refresh” at its annual strategic planning meeting in November of this year. GOED’s current “GOED 2025” strategic plan ends at the end of 2025, so this facilitated discussion will help reframe the organization’s goals and activities for the 2026-2028 period.
The board also approved a new project to better understand natural interferences in MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbon) test results. As background, GOED has completed preliminary testing regarding substances of natural origins that look like MOAH, leading to false positives in test results. This project will replicate that test as well as test additional fish oils so we can determine how to mitigate these occurrences or whether to reach out to the European Commission with the argument that current laboratory tests should not be applicable to fish oil matrices.
There was a discussion at the meeting about the Scientific Consensus project, the goal of which is to define an EPA + DHA intake recommendation for healthy adults. The expert panel has been compiled, but there were some adjustments needed to the scope and approach of the project, and the timeline likely needs to be extended by a few months.
During the March board call, the Life Cycle Assessment white paper was discussed, but the board had additional questions about the scope and methodology of the paper, which is meant to define what a valid life cycle assessment looks like across omega-3 sources. A Steering Committee was formed and an additional discussion with the proposed vendor was held, and the board has now approved moving forward with this project. Specifically, Step 1 and 2 of the proposal are moving forward, while Step 3 will be budgeted in 2026 but not officially approved until after Step 1 and 2 are complete.
Lastly, the board reviewed the financials and the budget forecast for the rest of 2025. Revenue and expenses are in line with the budget.
Please note that GOED does not analyze or make any representation of accuracy for the Omega-3 News items. This is simply a compilation of news articles found on the internet that are relevant to the EPA and DHA business.

This report presents the evaluation of ISO 12966-4, an analytical method that is reportedly extensively used by laboratories involved in shipped goods and controls at ports. The evaluation concludes that the method should not be used to obtain an accurate quantification of EPA, DHA and Total Omega-3 in omega-3 oils. The evaluation was carried out by a working group of GOED’s Technical Committee. If you have any questions, please contact Gerard Bannenberg.
