GOED Submits Letter to EC on Mixed Tocopherols in Advance of Proposed MOAH ML Setting
As reported in the February 19 GOED Current, the European Commission (EC) recently issued a working document announcing an open consultation to stakeholders on a proposal for a maximum limit (ML) on mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) of 2 mg/kg for food additives, which includes antioxidants. In response, GOED prepared and submitted a letter regarding mixed tocopherols (E306). In the letter, GOED pointed out that MOAH frequently cannot be quantified in mixed tocopherols due to massive matrix interference, and that the setting of an ML for MOAH may lead to a situation where companies cannot purchase or use mixed tocopherols in their operations.
No information has been provided regarding the timeline for when the regulation is expected to be enforced. We will inform members if the EC responds to our letter. Please direct any questions to Gerard Bannenberg.

GOED member Bioriginal has developed a new line of omega-3 fish, algal and plant-based oils in collaboration with recently-purchased POS Biosciences.
India signed a trade and economic partnership agreement with the four-nation European Free Trade Association (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) to boost trade investments. The government will phase out customs duties on imported goods, including seafood, oils and other foods and beverages.
The final report for the 28th Session of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils (CCFO28) has been posted to the Codex website. GOED last reported on CCFO28 in the February 28, 2024 GOED Current.

Pure Encapsulations, owned by GOED member Nestle Health Sciences, launched its supplement brand in The Vitamin Shoppe and Super Supplements stores across the US. The brand was previously focused on the practitioner channel.
