US DRI Update

Last week, GOED attended the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS) Annual Meeting, and Harry Rice, PhD, presented in a session entitled, “Evidence Required for New DRIs [Dietary Reference Intake] for Fat and Fatty Acids - What About EPA and DHA?” There were some interesting learnings in the session that we would like to share with members.

The speakers in the DRI session included Ann Yaktine, PhD, from the US Food and Nutrition Board (Presentation Title: The National Academies Process for Establishing DRI Values) and Alice Lichtenstein, DSc from Tufts University (Presentation Title: Approach to Setting DRIs for Fat and Fatty Acids).

  • According to Dr. Yaktine, a 30-day stop work order was recently issued by the US government, so the systematic reviews being conducted through the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) — which is the first step of the DRI process — are on hold. While the AHRQ reviews are important, and must be completed before a DRI review can commence, they are just one aspect of the DRI review.
  • The US has yet to commit to funding the DRI reviews. GOED finds this concerning given the recent cuts in both personnel and funding in the US. The status of Canada’s commitment is unknown.
  • Lichtenstein appears to be the only content (i.e. fat) expert associated with the systematic reviews. The other experts are focused specifically on conducting the analyses.
  • Yaktine and Lichtenstein were asked about the ability to use results from secondary prevention trials to support a DRI. Both were clear that DRIs are for the general healthy population; therefore, secondary prevention trials should not be used to support the DRIs. GOED notes that if the DRI review committee is not flexible on this requirement, results from only one large clinical trial, VITAL, will be relevant when assessing the benefits of EPA+DHA for cardiovascular outcomes, and the primary results from VITAL did not demonstrate a benefit of EPA+DHA.

GOED last reported on DRIs in a 19 November 2024 News Alert, and the last comprehensive update on DRIs was reported in the 13 May 2024 GOED Current.

Gerard Bannenberg was also at the AOCS event and co-chaired a session entitled “Challenges and Solutions to Commercial Processing: Equipment Performance, Product Quality, Food Safety Challenges.”
