Update on Peru Anchovy Fishing Season
The second fishing season for the Peruvian anchovy fishery is seven weeks into the season and results have been mixed. Fishing companies are operating with a quota of 2.5 million metric tons, which is the third largest quota for the second fishing season in the last decade, and as of December 18 had caught almost 70% of this. However, GOED members in the region report a mix in terms of fat content and oil yields, and the EPA and DHA profile is lower than in the first season, with averages in the 26% or 27% range. While a respectable amount of fish oil should be available from this season, there are questions about how much will be suitable for use in the human nutrition industry.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a final rule to update the “healthy” nutrient content claim to help consumers identify foods (e.g. seafood) that are particularly useful as the foundation of a diet that is consistent with dietary recommendations. Like the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the focus of “healthy” is on foods (e.g. seafood) that contribute to a healthy dietary pattern and not on the identification of foods with specific individual nutrient (e.g. EPA/DHA) amounts.
