GOED Submits Responses to AHRQ Requests
GOED has submitted responses to three AHRQ requests (detailed in the November 8, 18 and 19 GOED Breaking News). GOED is hopeful that the responses will help ensure the execution of comprehensive and well balanced systematic reviews to be used during the upcoming macronutrient DRI reviews.
The second fishing season for the Peruvian anchovy fishery is seven weeks into the season and results have been mixed. Fishing companies are operating with a quota of 2.5 million metric tons, which is the third largest quota for the second fishing season in the last decade, and as of December 18 had caught almost 70% of this. However, GOED members in the region report a mix in terms of fat content and oil yields, and the EPA and DHA profile is lower than in the first season, with averages in the 26% or 27% range. While a respectable amount of fish oil should be available from this season, there are questions about how much will be suitable for use in the human nutrition industry.
Breaking News from Last Week
The European Member States Expert Group discussed upcoming mineral oil hydrocarbon (MOH) regulations.
Norway and the Faroe Islands have signed their first sharing agreement on Norwegian spring-spawning herring in over a decade. Under the deal, Norway receives 64.2% of the quota, the Faroe Islands 10% and 25.8% remains unallocated for Iceland, Russia and the EU. Both nations have reduced their quotas by a combined 22.8% compared to last year.
Russia caught 4.66 million metric tons (MT) of seafood in 2024, a 7% decrease year-over-year, largely due to a sharp decline in salmon catches. Pollock remains the largest share of the catch, with 1.87 million MT, up 18,900 MT from 2023.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a final rule to update the “healthy” nutrient content claim to help consumers identify foods (e.g. seafood) that are particularly useful as the foundation of a diet that is consistent with dietary recommendations. Like the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the focus of “healthy” is on foods (e.g. seafood) that contribute to a healthy dietary pattern and not on the identification of foods with specific individual nutrient (e.g. EPA/DHA) amounts.
