The A-Fib paper GOED has been working on for many months — a comparison of the risks and benefits of EPA and DHA omega-3 supplementation — has been accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal Value in Health. The pre-published proof, as well as the Pub Med link, are now available online. We expect the paper to be published in print in October.
This paper explored the impact of EPA and DHA supplementation on quality adjusted life years (QALY), a standard health economics measure used to compare the effectiveness of health-related interventions. The data show that omega-3 interventions at all dosages from 300-2,500 mg/day result in gains in QALYs, compared to usual care, and therefore the cardiovascular benefits associated with omega-3 intake outweigh the reported risk of A-fib. Supplementation with all dosages in this range was found to be cost-effective. GOED is working on specific talking points to share with members.
GOED is also planning a full public relations/communications campaign, complete with a consumer press release, media pitching and influencer and HCP outreach once the article is in print. In addition, we will be updating our A-Fib key messages document and working on talking points to aid in future discussions with global policymakers.
It is also worth noting that the additional A-Fib paper GOED has commissioned, the research for which is being done by GOED partner FARI, is expected to be submitted for publication in September, and the findings in this paper also reflect more positively on the overall A-fib story.
This publication comes at an important time, as the new issue of the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment’s (BfR) science magazine, BfR2GO, has been published and the lead article focuses on food supplements and the widespread misconceptions about them. Of the five misunderstandings presented, the fifth one – “Food supplements are harmless,…” - mentions omega-3s as an example. Specifically, the article reads, “Food supplements…, may lead to undesired effects,… For instance, in persons with heart disease, products with omega-3 fatty acids may increase the risk of atrial fibrillation.” This position was first communicated in a 16 November 2023 letter to healthcare professionals.
For any questions about the GOED publication, please contact Aldo Bernasconi, VP of Data Science and lead author of the paper. Questions about the communications campaign should be directed to Elana Natker, Director of Consumer and Health Professional Communications.
Please note that GOED does not analyze or make any representation of accuracy for the Omega-3 News items. This is simply a compilation of news articles found on the internet that are relevant to the EPA and DHA business.

GOED Invited to EC Stakeholder Forum on Mineral Oil Hydrocarbons in Food Additives
GOED has received an invitation to participate in a European Commission (EC) stakeholder forum (3 October 2025) on mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) in food additives. The aim of the forum is to discuss the status of MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons) specifically in food additives, supported by new occurrence data from industry stakeholders. Last year, GOED submitted a letter pointing out the high matrix interference in MOH measurements in mixed tocopherols, precluding MOAH quantification in this food additive fundamental to omega-3 product stabilization.
We are asking members to share any significant progress made in the quantification of MOH in mixed tocopherols, or if any approaches to mitigate MOH and interferences in these antioxidant products have been developed. Please support your feedback with testing results. If there is nothing new to report, GOED will not present during the stakeholder forum, but we will request participation as a viewer. Please note that this request is only focused on mixed tocopherols. We continue to work separately on MOH initiatives in omega-3 oils. If you have any questions, please contact Gerard Bannenberg.

The revision is based on the official monograph of May 1, 2025, and suggests updates to the upper limits in the identification acceptance criteria –specifically, the ratio of the area percentage of palmitic acid to myristic acid, and the area percentage of EPA. The proposed limits are 3.9 and 32.0, respectively (previously 3.6 and 28.0 area %).
Subscribers can access the proposal via the My Dashboard homepage by selecting PF 51(4) and locating the Krill Oil monograph or by searching for “krill oil” in the search bar, where the document will appear as the first result, identified with “Commenting open” in blue.
