GOED Partners with Hy-Vee Supermarkets on Retail Activation
During the month of June, GOED, along with GOED member Nordic Naturals and the Alzheimer’s Association, partnered with Hy-Vee Supermarkets in the US on an omega-3 focused in-store campaign. This is a repeat of a campaign done in March 2023, in which 2000 Omega-3 Index tests were administered by in-store dietitians to Hy-Vee customers throughout the 280+ retail locations in the US Midwest and South regions. Test results were sent to the registered dietitians, who met with the customers again to discuss the results and provide them with information and free samples provided by Nordic Naturals.
The collaboration included:
12 organically placed/pitched local television media spots with Hy-Vee dietitians, resulting in a total reach of 2.7 million
Paid Hy-Vee branded television segments with Hy-Vee dietitians airing in eight states for a total reach of nearly 44.5 million
19 online/print articles with a combined reach of more than 15 million
5 radio interviews with a total reach of more than 47,000
Information about omega-3s and the program in the Hy-Vee customer magazine
Social media postings on Hy-Vee Facebook and Instagram channels
Web-based customer education led by Hy-Vee dietitians
In-store activations and signage, including Nordic Naturals products labeled as “Dietitian’s Pick”
Sales data from Hy-Vee wasn’t yet available, but the March 2023 campaign saw a 52% increase in sales on omega-3 products during the month.
Retail activations such as this are great for both GOED and its brand member company partners. With GOED providing unbranded, credible information about EPA+DHA omega-3s to dietitians to share with their customers, and brands providing the call-to-action for consumer purchases, this is a winning recipe for all involved. Update on GOED’s Special Achievement Program for
Omega-3 Quantification
Last month GOED launched the first year of our Special Achievement Program, which recognizes laboratories that are highly proficient in quantifying EPA and DHA in omega-3 oils. This year GOED members Lipid Analytical Labs and KD LabService are the awardees. Interested members need to enroll in the AOCS-GOED Nutraceutical Oils Laboratory Proficiency Program (LPP), the deadline for which is August 20, 2024. GOED strongly encourages members to invite their partner laboratories to apply for the program. More information is available in the short video above by GOED’s Director of Technical Compliance and Outreach Gerard Bannenberg, PhD.
Please note that GOED does not analyze or make any representation of accuracy for the Omega-3 News items. This is simply a compilation of news articles found on the internet that are relevant to the EPA and DHA business.

GOED Launches MOH Resources Page
GOED has created a webpage on the GOED website curating all of the relevant resources on the mineral oil hydrocarbon (MOH) topic. This dedicated page includes all the information our members often inquire about: regulations of mineral oils and MOH, MOH mitigation guidance, industry input provided to the European Commission, and contacts for specialized laboratories that analyze MOH. A selection of GOED Current editions that traces the progression of developments around MOH is also included, as is a series of presentations and webinars. We ask that members do not externalize these resources as they are intended for members only. If you have any additional questions, please contact Gerard Bannenberg.

On 30 July 2024, Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health published two omega-3 related announcements, Ministry of Public Health Announcement (No. 451) B.E. 2567 issued under the Food Act B.E. 2522 on Oil and Fat (No. 2) and Ministry of Public Health Announcement (No. 452) B.E. 2567 issued under the Food Act B.E. 2522 regarding Fish Oil (No. 2). Both announcements were published in draft form at the end of 2023 and communicated Thailand FDA’s willingness to consider, during product registration, deviations from the published specifications. See Highlights from 31 October 2022 GOED Current for the specifications (Thai only).
While GOED has been unable to translate either of the most recent announcements, based on World Trade Organization Notifications G/TBT/N/THA/723/Add.1, it does not appear that either announcement was modified, so the Thai FDA‘s willingness to consider deviations from the published specifications remains.
In October, 2022 and again in March, 2024, GOED sent letters to the Thai FDA asking them to remove the specifications for the majority of the fatty acids, except EPA and DHA, for Schizochytrium oil. While the requests are not reflected in the specifications, GOED is encouraged by the Thai FDA’s flexibility to consider deviations from the published specifications.

US Senator Dick Durbin last week introduced the Dietary Supplement Listing Act of 2024, which requires dietary supplement manufacturers to list their products with the US FDA. This overall concept has been discussed and has the support of US supplement associations, but the Congressional proposal takes the requirements beyond what has been suggested by industry.
