GOED Submits Comments on Draft AHRQ Report
Last week GOED submitted comments in response to the draft report from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), entitled, "Dietary Total Fat Intake and Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Intake and Child Growth and Development Outcomes: A Systematic Review." GOED focused on Key Question 1: “What is the association between dietary intake of omega-6 and/or omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids during pregnancy and risk of preterm birth?” The letter provided extensive comments rebutting the draft report’s conclusions that omega-3s had no effect on preterm and early preterm birth.
In our letter, we highlighted the following four points:
The analysis of the included data does not adequately answer the research question and follows a methodology that departs from the pre-specified methods.
Some relevant interventional studies may have been missed.
The review does not adequately acknowledge prior reviews and meta-analyses that addressed the same question but reached different conclusions.
The review fails to consider that DHA supplementation is particularly effective in preventing preterm birth in women with low DHA status.
As reported in the 18 September 2025 news alert, GOED provided a letter for members to use to submit comments as well. The deadline is today (September 29) for any members who still wish to submit comments.

Israel Exempts Fish Oils from Needing Veterinary Certificates
On August 8th, Israel’s Ministry of Health announced the launch of a Proper Importer process specifically for dietary supplements, moving prior approvals to a dedicated online portal (replacing the previous manual process). As part of this change, when a dietary supplement’s animal-derived component is fish oil, no veterinary certificate from the country of production is required in the application file, according to the official regulation (digital version link). This exemption applies only to the prior-approval application stage. Standard border requirements remain unchanged and should be planned as before. The Ministry notes the model is intended to reduce bureaucracy, strengthen business certainty and lower regulatory burden while maintaining risk-based supervision by marketing-channel inspectors and quarantine stations.
