GOED Announces 2025/26 Clinical Study Database Research Award Winners

GOED is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2025/26 Clinical Study Database (CSD) Research Awards:

1-1

Suet-Kei Wu, PhD Candidate, China Medical University, Taiwan
Wu’s research examines the effects of dietary omega-3 fatty acids on mental health, with a focus on Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Her work explores how omega-3s may interact with metabolic dysfunction, inflammation and gut health, particularly across different weight groups.

2-3

Adriana Pana, MSc, RDN, PhD Student, George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Romania
Pana’s research will examine how omega-3 supplementation influences insulin sensitivity, glycemic control and inflammation in individuals with diabetes, while also assessing the effects of omega-3s on cognitive function, depression  and anxiety in this population.

As part of the award, Wu and Pana will act as Research Assistants, contributing data to the CSD. They will also use the CSD in their PhD research, focusing on the relationships between nutrition, metabolic health and brain health.

We also extend our congratulations to the 2024/25 Research Award winners, who have successfully presented their research at international conferences and published papers using insights from the GOED CSD. Thank you to all these talented young researchers for helping to expand our understanding of omega-3 science.

Highlights

Update on the International Tariff Situation

We have gotten questions from several members regarding the ongoing tariff situation. The reality is, this is changing on an almost-daily basis and the implications are unclear. While GOED did request an exemption for omega-3s in May, we never received a response from US government authorities and as of now, there are no exemptions for any omega-3 products. You can find additional details on tariff codes and percentages here. We will update members if we learn anything further.

Regulatory & Certifications

In the past few weeks, GOED has attended the US National Institutes of Health “Workshop on Prenatal Dietary Supplements: Evidence Gaps and Research Needs” as well as the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) webinar, “Exploring the Types of Evidence Behind Diet and Chronic Disease: A Webinar.” The prenatal workshop did include a session specifically on omega-3s and was supportive of supplement intake for reducing the risk of preterm birth, while the NASEM webinar explored the types of evidence used to look at relationships between diet and chronic disease. Both have the potential to impact future work on dietary reference intakes (DRIs) in Canada and the US, as well as the Dietary Guidelines in the US, so GOED will continue to monitor similar events and provide input when applicable.

Member-Sponsored Research

GOED member Aker BioMarine sponsored research at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, showing that krill oil supplementation during alternate-day fasting helps preserve muscle mass and strength, reducing losses during rapid weight loss.
